A run of four games without a win wasn’t how Las Palmas will have envisioned beginning 2024, but Los Amarillos will look to put things right at home to a struggling Villarreal side on Saturday. Garcia Pimienta’s side were hard done by against Barcelona in their first outing of the new year and lost 2-1 at home despite taking the lead through former Barca wonderkid Munir El Haddadi. As if that wasn’t disappointment enough, Las Palmas has since been ejected from the Copa del Rey after losing at second-tier Tenerife, hoping to end a winless run that dates back more than a month.

Villarreal’s form of late hasn’t been that much better, with Marcelino’s men winning just two of their last eight fixtures across all competitions.

Like Saturday’s opponents, the Yellow Submarine has also been ousted from the Copa del Rey after losing on penalties at Unionistas de Salamanca following a 1-1 draw after playing out 120 minutes.

Villarreal will be sorely disappointed with this season’s performances to date, sat 13th in the league standings at the midway point and all but certain to miss out on European qualification.

Even a win at the Estadio de Gran Canaria this weekend would only be sufficient to pull the club within three points of Las Palmas, who sits 10th and is looking to tie down its top-half membership.

Even a late Gerard Moreno strike couldn’t prevent Marcelino’s side from slipping to a 2-1 defeat at home to the Canary Islanders when these sides met in October.

Villarreal hasn’t visited the Estadio de Gran Canaria since March 2018 when Las Palmas was last a part of La Liga, though that trip did end up with a 2-0 victory in its favor.
